Story Behind the Art: Soumak rugs come from a long flatweaving tradition associated with the Caucasus, Persia, and Anatolia, where nomadic and village communities created durable textiles for both practical and decorative use. Unlike kilims, Soumak construction involves wrapping the weft around the warp, producing a textured surface with an almost embroidered appearance. This technique is especially suited to geometric motifs, stylized flowers, tribal symbols, and angular decorative forms, all of which stand out with strong definition across the woven field. Traditionally made from hand-spun wool and natural dyes, Soumak rugs became prized for their strength, reversible structure, and rich tonal character. Today, the technique continues in several weaving regions, including India, where artisans reinterpret historic patterns for modern interiors while preserving the distinctive low-profile texture of the weave.
