Story Behind the Art: The Arts and Crafts Movement began in the 19th century as a response to mass-produced factory goods, championing originality and skilled handwork. William Morris, its best-known voice, favored handcraft over machinery and brought a new design outlook into the home, drawing on nature through furniture, upholstery, wallpaper, and rugs filled with interlacing fruit, flowers, and foliage. His rug designs remain popular today and stand as the signature of Arts & Crafts rugs, with their simple, bold, informal themes rooted in the natural world. Today the style spans a wide range, from Art Nouveau patterns with flowing, curved lines and floral motifs to Mission-style designs, geometric patterns inspired by Native American art, American Prairie style, and Caucasian rugs, which are hand-knotted in the small Middle Eastern region of the Caucasus. Natural motifs and an interesting color palette give Arts and Crafts rugs their versatility and lasting charm.
