Discover the Slate Gold Donegal Arts & Crafts Oriental area rug from LoomBloom, a hand tufted wool piece that takes its cue from the celebrated Donegal designs of Ireland's Arts & Crafts movement. On a slate gray ground, stylized trees spread branches of orange, each hung with leaves of gold and small red buds. Evergreens in turquoise rise beside them, and tiny black birds sit among the boughs like characters in a storybook. A thin red stripe leads outward to a broad border in gold, thick with orange blossoms and black clusters of flowers, and a scroll edge in black and gray completes the frame. Tufted by hand from wool, this handmade rug has a soft pile that lets each tree and blossom stand out in clear, graphic detail. Wool that is naturally stain resistant and resilient is also a welcome bonus if kids and pets share your home. The playful botanical pattern and traditional structure give it a vintage-inspired spirit, yet its bold color keeps it lively and modern. Anchor your living room, bedroom, dining room, entryway or home office with this artisan-made statement rug and let its woodland tale unfold underfoot.

Story Behind the Art: Ireland's rug industry began in the late 1800s, when Morton & Company started producing rugs in Donegal. Rugs made there in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were known for richly decorative motifs given a distinctly Irish interpretation, borrowing from Oriental and Persian rug designs as well as from Celtic art. Donegal weavers also absorbed ideas from popular movements of the day, including Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau. With their expansive compositions and singular character, Donegal rugs are valued for how easily they suit a wide range of decor styles.
