Story Behind the Art: Sarouk rugs originate from the historic weaving centers of Arak and the surrounding Farahan plains in central Iran, a region long celebrated for producing some of Persia’s finest handmade carpets. During the nineteenth century, Sarouk rugs commonly featured intricate all-over Herati and Gul Hennai patterns woven with remarkable precision using dense asymmetric knotting on durable cotton foundations. By the late 1800s, influenced by the grandeur and sophistication of Tabriz workshop carpets, Sarouk weavers began incorporating formal central medallion layouts with elegant floral symmetry and richly detailed botanical motifs. Following World War I, the Sarouk style evolved once again into the now-iconic open floral compositions featuring gracefully scattered bouquets and detached floral sprays across richly colored fields. This distinctive decorative innovation quickly gained immense popularity throughout American and European markets and remains one of the defining hallmarks of Persian rug artistry today. Modern Sarouk-inspired rugs continue to be woven in Iran, India, Pakistan, and Romania, preserving the timeless elegance, luxurious wool texture, and enduring decorative appeal of this legendary Persian weaving tradition.
