Story Behind the Art: Mahal Sarouk rugs originate from the Arak region of central Iran, historically known as Sultanabad, where master weavers produced some of the most decorative Persian rugs of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Created largely for growing European and American demand, these rugs became especially admired for their flowing floral artistry, oversized roses, scrolling vines, bold palmettes, and richly layered botanical compositions rendered in warm inviting tones. Unlike highly formal Persian court carpets, Mahal Sarouk rugs embraced a more relaxed decorative elegance with spacious layouts and expressive movement throughout the design. During the early twentieth-century export trade, many antique examples were carefully re-dyed to suit Western interior preferences, often resulting in subtle tonal variations that further enhanced their vintage charm and collectible appeal. Today, Mahal Sarouk rugs remain prized for their timeless Persian beauty, luxurious wool texture, and exceptional decorative versatility.
