Story Behind the Art: French needlepoint rugs originated in 17th- and 18th-century France, produced by the celebrated Aubusson and Savonnerie workshops for royal residences and aristocratic interiors. Rather than being knotted, these designs were hand-stitched onto canvas using fine petit point and gros point needlework techniques, resulting in floral medallions, elegant scrollwork, garlands, and softly blended pastel palettes drawn from classical European decorative art. Pieces in this style once furnished palaces, châteaux, and formal salons, prized for their meticulous stitched craftsmanship. By the late 20th century, Chinese artisans had become significant producers of French-style needlepoint rugs, applying long-established weaving and embroidery skills to reproduce Aubusson and Savonnerie patterns for a global market. Today's versions are hand-stitched or handwoven, typically combining wool with a cotton canvas foundation, preserving the refined look of antique French originals at a more accessible price.
