Story Behind the Art: Sarouk rugs come from the renowned weaving centers of Arak, the surrounding villages, and the Farahan plains of central Iran, a region long respected for producing some of Persia’s most elegant handmade carpets. During the nineteenth century, Sarouk rugs commonly featured intricate all-over Herati and Gul Hennai patterns woven with dense asymmetric knotting on strong cotton foundations. Influenced later by the grandeur of Tabriz workshop carpets, Sarouk weavers embraced more formal medallion layouts with balanced floral symmetry and richly decorative compositions. Following World War I, Sarouk artisans introduced the now-iconic open floral style featuring gracefully scattered bouquets and detached floral sprays across richly colored fields, a design innovation that became highly sought after throughout Europe and America. Today, Sarouk-inspired rugs continue to be woven in Iran, India, Pakistan, and Romania, preserving the timeless beauty and enduring legacy of Persian floral artistry.
