Story Behind the Art: Shirvan rugs are among the most respected examples of Caucasian weaving, originating from the historic Shirvan region of present-day Azerbaijan. Celebrated for their precise geometry, fine knotting, and rich symbolic meaning, these rugs often feature vertically aligned central medallions—commonly octagonal or star-shaped—arranged in structured sequences. Caucasian rugs are especially known for bold tribal designs rendered in strong primary colors, with visual balance achieved through the contrast of distinctly different hues rather than subtle shading. All Caucasian rugs are woven using the Turkish (Ghiordes) knot and are classified as village rugs, further divided by regional subtypes such as Akstafa, Baku, Aghestan, Karabagh, Kazak, Kuba, and Shirvan. Their graphic strength, cultural symbolism, and enduring durability make Shirvan rugs highly collectible and visually powerful.
