Soft pistachio green, luminous gold, and intricate floral ornament give this hand-knotted New Zealand wool area rug a refined presence that feels equally at home in traditional and transitional interiors. The serene pistachio field is enhanced by a warm gold-washed finish, creating subtle variations in tone and highlighting decorative motifs in rust, maroon, creamy beige, and complementary earth colors. Rather than overwhelming the room, the harmonious palette brings warmth and visual interest while maintaining an elegant, collected appearance. Skilled artisans individually knot the fine New Zealand wool fibers to create a dense, supple surface with comfortable texture and a naturally lustrous finish. The result is a handmade wool rug with the detailed character of traditional weaving and a color story versatile enough for contemporary homes. Place this oriental area rug in a living room, dining room, bedroom, formal sitting area, or home office to complement wood furniture, neutral upholstery, vintage pieces, and layered textiles while adding timeless design and handcrafted beauty to the floor. Note: This rug was photographed under studio lighting, which means the colors on screen may appear a little more vibrant than they do in person. We'd recommend watching the video below for a truer sense of the palette.
Story Behind the Art: The Indian carpet-weaving tradition experienced significant artistic development during the Mughal period, particularly under Emperor Akbar, when important weaving centers were established in cities including Agra, Delhi, and Lahore during the late 16th century. Although early examples were strongly influenced by Persian textile traditions, Indian artisans gradually developed their own recognizable approach through increasingly detailed knotting, refined wool, expressive color combinations, and naturalistic decorative motifs. Agra rugs became particularly associated with grand compositions featuring scrolling floral tendrils, angular vines, broad leaves, palmettes, and generously scaled blossoms. Many designs favor elaborate all-over arrangements surrounded by substantial decorative borders, creating a sense of rhythm and visual richness across the entire surface. This combination of Persian-inspired structure and Indian decorative interpretation helped establish Agra rugs as an enduring category within traditional hand-knotted carpet design.
