Story Behind the Art: Kazak rugs are widely recognized for their striking look, durability, and richly saturated, naturally dyed colors. They were first woven by tribes living in the Caucasus Mountains, between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, and they feature distinctive geometric compositions with a tribal character. Common motifs include medallions, rosettes, hooked polygons, diamonds, and crosses, along with depictions of animals, birds, trees, and people. Kazak rugs made in Azerbaijan, in Iran, or near the Caucasus Mountains are known as Caucasian Kazaks, while Kazak-style rugs woven in Afghanistan are called Afghan Kazaks. In modern times Pakistan has also become an important center for Kazak production.
