Story Behind the Art: In the rug trade, the name Sarouk covers pieces woven in Arak, in the villages around it, and across the plains of Farahan in central Iran, a region long admired for its weaving. During the 19th century, Sarouk rugs typically carried intricate allover designs such as the Herati and the Gul Hennai, tied with roughly 100 asymmetric knots per square inch on sturdy cotton foundations. By the late 1800s, local weavers had taken inspiration from the grandeur of Tabriz carpets and moved toward a more formal look, producing factory-made rugs with central floral medallions and precise symmetry. That medallion style held sway until the years after World War I, when Sarouk artisans introduced a more open layout in which graceful, detached floral sprays are scattered across the field. This innovation became the signature of the Sarouk tradition and won over collectors and markets around the world. Its influence continues today in Sarouk-inspired rugs woven not only in Iran but also in India, Romania, and Pakistan, each carrying forward the beauty of Persian artistry.
