Richly patterned and full of handcrafted character, this Soumak wool area rug combines the expressive geometry of traditional flatwoven textiles with the nature-inspired decorative language associated with Arts & Crafts design. A light-gold background comes alive with mirrored ikat-style medallions, feathered palmettes, stepped botanical forms, and carefully arranged geometric details in rust, sage green, caramel, aqua, and creamy ivory. The varied earth-toned palette gives the rug warmth and personality while remaining versatile enough to coordinate with wood, leather, linen, and other natural materials. Soumak weaving uses a distinctive weft-wrapping technique that creates a textured, dimensional surface different from the flatter appearance of a conventional kilim, adding tactile interest throughout the design. Crafted from wool, this handmade area rug combines colorful pattern with a substantial textile character that works beautifully in both traditional and eclectic spaces. Use it as a living room rug, dining room rug, bedroom rug, hallway accent, or Arts & Crafts area rug to introduce timeless design, geometric detail, and artisan-inspired texture into your home décor. Note: This rug was photographed under studio lighting, which means the colors on screen may appear a little more vibrant than they do in person. We'd recommend watching the video below for a truer sense of the palette.
Story Behind the Art: Soumak rugs belong to a long-established flatweaving tradition associated with the Caucasus, Persia, Anatolia, and neighboring weaving regions. Unlike conventional kilim construction, Soumak weaving uses a distinctive weft-wrapping method in which yarns are wrapped around the warp threads, creating a textured surface that can resemble embroidery. This technique lends itself particularly well to sharply defined geometric motifs, stylized flowers, medallions, tribal symbols, and repeating angular compositions. Historically, Soumak construction was used not only for floor coverings but also for bags and other practical woven textiles used by nomadic and settled communities. Wool and naturally derived colors were commonly incorporated into traditional pieces. Contemporary Soumak-inspired rugs continue to be produced in several weaving regions, including India, preserving the characteristic texture and graphic patterning that distinguish this versatile flatwoven style.
