Story Behind the Art: Originating in the village of Serabend in northwestern Iran, Serabend rugs emerged in the 19th century with a visual identity all their own. These pieces are best known for their signature boteh design—almond-shaped motifs arranged across fields typically dyed in deep reds or dark blues. Surrounding this pattern is the distinctive “shekeri” border, composed of a finely stylized vine scroll that frames the composition with elegant detail. Serabend rugs were traditionally woven using double-wefted symmetric knots, a structure that lends strength, clarity, and precision to the patterns. Their durability and crisp motif definition made them prized throughout Persia and beyond, and they remain sought after today for their balanced combination of sturdiness and refined artistry.
