Story Behind the Art: Indo-Tabriz rugs are a refined blend of Persian design heritage and Indian weaving expertise. Produced in India, these rugs draw their inspiration from the historic city of Tabriz in northwestern Iran, long renowned for its technical mastery and intricate patterns. Indo-Tabriz rugs faithfully recreate classic Tabriz motifs, most notably the Mahi or Herati pattern, characterized by a repeating diamond lattice with stylized fish or leaf forms. Typically woven using the Persian (asymmetrical) knot, they feature a wool pile on a cotton foundation. While authentic Persian Tabriz rugs tend to have a very stiff and compact back, Indo-Tabriz rugs are slightly more flexible and supple, making them easier to handle while still offering excellent detail and durability. These rugs provide an accessible way to enjoy the elegance of Tabriz design with exceptional craftsmanship at a more attainable price point.
