Story Behind the Art: Mahal rugs are produced in the area around the city of Arak, which has a history of rug weaving dating back to the mid-17th Century. The city was originally founded in 1808 as Sultanabad and later in 1930 was renamed to the city of Arak. The design of Mahals tend to be more closely associated to those of Heriz or Serapi due to their magnificent graphic character of the designs. That said, the line work of Mahals is more curvilinear and classical while they do maintain a more casual and tribal feel. Traditional color palettes found on Mahal rugs include subtle neutrals, vibrant reds and clear blues that create a regal Western appearance. Unique color combinations, such as tourmaline pink paired with oxidized green, are also found on Mahal rugs that highlights their tendency to reinvent the traditional.
