Story Behind the Art: Portuguese needlepoint rugs, widely known as Arraiolos rugs, have been woven in the town of Arraiolos since at least the 17th century. Inspired by Persian carpet designs that arrived through trade, these rugs are made using a signature cross-stitch embroidery technique on a woven jute or linen foundation. Traditionally composed of wool, Arraiolos rugs often feature symmetrical geometric or floral motifs, with central medallions and decorative borders that reflect both Moorish and European influences. Lightweight yet durable, these rugs were prized historically for their decorative charm and practicality. Over the centuries, Arraiolos weaving has evolved into a refined art form, representing a fusion of cultures and a lasting emblem of Portuguese textile heritage.
