Story Behind the Art: Tibetan rug weaving is one of the oldest and most distinctive textile traditions in Asia, deeply connected to the cultural and spiritual heritage of the Himalayan region. For centuries, Tibetan artisans created rugs featuring geometric patterns, branching florals, mythical creatures, auspicious symbols, and natural imagery inspired by Buddhist beliefs and mountain landscapes. Following the Tibetan diaspora after 1959, rug weaving traditions expanded significantly throughout Nepal and northern India, where Tibetan refugees and Nepalese artisans worked together to preserve and evolve this remarkable craft. Tibetan rugs are especially recognized for their unique slit-loop weaving method known as the Tibetan knot, which creates a luxurious pile with exceptional softness, texture, and dimensional depth. Today, Tibetan, Nepalese, and Indo-Tibetan rugs range from traditional symbolic motifs such as snow lions and medallions to contemporary abstract and transitional designs, making them highly sought after for both classic and modern interiors.
