Story Behind the Art: Indo-Tibetan rugs are a unique class of hand-knotted carpets that unite ancient Tibetan weaving traditions with skilled Indian craftsmanship. Although Tibetan rug artistry dates back thousands of years, the modern Indo-Tibetan industry expanded significantly after 1959, when Tibetan refugees relocated to Northern India and carried their techniques with them. These rugs are defined by the Tibetan loop knot, where yarn is wrapped around a rod and cut to form a dense, resilient pile. Traditionally made from Himalayan sheep wool, many contemporary versions incorporate premium New Zealand wool for added softness. Historically utilitarian in nature, these rugs once served as bedding, seating mats, and saddle coverings before becoming highly regarded decorative pieces.
