Story Behind the Art: Kerman rugs originate from the historic weaving city of Kerman in southeastern Iran, a region internationally celebrated for producing some of Persia’s most technically refined and artistically sophisticated carpets. Since the Safavid era, Kerman has been renowned for master workshop weaving characterized by exceptionally fine craftsmanship, elegant floral compositions, and remarkable color complexity. Traditional Kerman rugs often feature ornate central medallions, scrolling arabesques, floral borders, garden scenes, vase motifs, hunting imagery, Tree of Life patterns, and all-over boteh or Shah Abbasi floral designs arranged with extraordinary balance and precision. Among the most iconic are vase-pattern Kerman rugs, recognized for repeating boteh or vase motifs layered across richly decorated floral backgrounds. Admired for their delicate detailing, luxurious wool, and luminous palettes often incorporating fifteen to thirty distinct colors, Kerman rugs can take well over a year to complete and remain treasured examples of Persian weaving excellence and timeless decorative artistry.
