The tradition of rug weaving in India began to thrive under the Mughal Empire in the 16th century, evolving into a celebrated art form admired around the world. These rugs are known for their tightly woven textures, velvety wool, rich colors, and intricately detailed designs that often feature realistic motifs. The blend of fine craftsmanship and elegant aesthetics has made Indian rugs both timeless and globally cherished. Today, India ranks as the third-largest exporter of handmade rugs, with annual exports valued at over $460 million. Indian artisans produce a wide variety of styles, from luxurious silk and Indo-Persian blends to affordable hand-tufted designs, Zeigler, and Kilims. The United States remains India’s largest market, accounting for 57% of all rug and floor covering exports in 2022.
