Story Behind the Art: Indo-Kashan rugs are an elegant Indian interpretation of the legendary carpets of Kashan, Iran, whose origins trace back to the royal Safavid courts of the 16th century. Today, Indo-Kashan rugs are woven in major Indian weaving centers such as Jaipur and Bhadohi, preserving the grandeur and classical beauty of the originals. They are widely regarded as some of the most timeless and regal rug designs in the world. Most Indo-Kashan rugs follow the iconic “medallion and corner” layout, often described as a book-cover design, featuring a central diamond-shaped medallion surrounded by densely arranged floral vines, palmettes, and arabesques. Some variations showcase the Shah Abbas all-over floral field without a central medallion. These rugs are hand-knotted at approximately 150–250 knots per square inch, using a 100% wool pile on a cotton foundation. Higher-end examples frequently use premium New Zealand wool for added softness and sheen, and may include silk highlights that give the floral motifs a subtle shimmer.
