Story Behind the Art: Rug weaving in India reached its artistic peak during the 16th century under the Mughal Empire, transforming into a highly regarded form of artistic expression. Indian rugs are renowned for their tight weaves, luxurious wool, vibrant color schemes, and lifelike motifs. The intricate craftsmanship and the refined designs of these rugs have made them highly sought after across the world. Over the centuries, Indian rugs have evolved, blending meticulous techniques with sophisticated artistry to create pieces that transcend time and culture. Today, India is the third-largest exporter of handmade rugs globally, with an export value exceeding $460 million. The country produces a broad range of carpets, from budget-friendly options to high-end luxury pieces, including styles like Indo-Persian, silk, wool-and-silk blends, hand-tufted, Zeigler, and Kilims. In 2022, the United States remained the largest importer, accounting for 57% of India's rug and floor covering exports.
