Story Behind the Art: The term Bokhara is widely used in the rug industry to describe carpets featuring the iconic Tekke gul pattern, originally associated with the Tekke tribe of Central Asia. These traditional rugs are easily identified by their orderly rows of repeating geometric motifs, most notably the octagonal “elephant foot” gul. While the design originated in the Bokhara region, Bokhara-style rugs are now hand-knotted across many countries including Pakistan, Iran, India, Turkey, Afghanistan, and other parts of Central Asia. Regional variations may introduce differences in color saturation, pile height, foundation materials such as wool or silk instead of cotton, or knotting techniques. Despite these differences, rugs that retain the classic Tekke gul composition are universally classified as Bokhara rugs, valued for their rhythmic geometry, durability, and timeless tribal character.
