Story Behind the Art: Portuguese needlepoint rugs, also widely recognized as Arraiolos rugs, trace their origins to the historic town of Arraiolos in Portugal, where this distinctive embroidery-based rug-making technique has been practiced since at least the 17th century. Influenced by Persian carpet designs introduced through early trade routes, these rugs are created using a cross-stitch method applied to a linen or jute foundation, resulting in a flat yet richly detailed surface. Traditionally woven with wool yarns, Portuguese needlepoint rugs often feature symmetrical floral arrangements, geometric patterns, and central medallions framed by decorative borders. Over time, the style has evolved to incorporate both Moorish and European artistic elements, making these rugs a unique blend of cultural influences, valued for their durability, lightweight structure, and timeless decorative appeal.
