Story Behind the Art: Hand-knotted rugs represent Pakistan’s second-largest cottage and small-scale industry, tracing their roots back to the 11th century during the Mughal era. Skilled artisans masterfully weave intricate patterns featuring traditional motifs such as guls, medallions, paisleys (botehs), traceries, and geometric forms in diverse arrangements. Many are treated with a “stone wash” process to gently fade and mellow the colors, enhancing their vintage charm. Among the most renowned styles, Peshawar rugs stand out for their finely sheared pile, bold large-scale designs, and signature antique ivory or soft golden hues that exude timeless elegance and craftsmanship.
