Shirvan rugs come from the Shirvan region in the eastern Caucasus and are known for their tightly woven structure, short pile, and detailed geometric designs. These rugs are hand-knotted using wool on a wool or cotton base and often feature medallions, lattice patterns, stylized flowers, and symbols in rich natural colors like deep blue, madder red, ivory, and gold. Their sharp designs and strong build make them favorites among collectors and home designers. Today, high-quality Shirvan-style rugs are also made in India, Pakistan, and Romania. In India and Pakistan, artisans use traditional knotting techniques with wool on cotton to recreate the original bold patterns and colors—sometimes using modern dyes for a more even look. Romanian weavers, especially in areas with strong flatweave traditions, make both pile and kilim versions, capturing the sharp, angular designs and sturdy quality of the original Shirvans.
