Story Behind the Art: The paisley boteh motif is a historic teardrop-shaped design that originated in ancient Persia, where it symbolized the cypress tree—an emblem of eternal life in Zoroastrian culture. Known as boteh or buta, the motif spread from Persian courts to Kashmiri workshops and later became globally recognized through the town of Paisley in Scotland. Interpreted as a flame, seed, or mother-and-child form, the boteh remains a powerful symbol of growth, resilience, and spiritual continuity, and continues to influence traditional rug design today.
