Portuguese needlepoint rugs, also called Arraiolos rugs, come from the town of Arraiolos in Portugal and have been made since at least the 1600s. These rugs were influenced by Persian carpet designs brought through trade. They’re made using a special cross-stitch embroidery method on a base of woven jute or linen. Traditionally crafted from wool, they often feature geometric or floral patterns in symmetrical layouts, with a central medallion and decorative borders. People appreciate these rugs for being strong, beautiful, and lighter than pile rugs. Over the years, Arraiolos rugs have blended Moorish and European styles, making them a unique part of Portugal’s textile history.
