During the 19th century, Sarouk rugs typically carried intricate allover designs such as the Herati and the Gul Hennai, tied with roughly 100 asymmetric knots per square inch on sturdy cotton foundations. By the late 1800s, local weavers had taken inspiration from the grandeur of Tabriz carpets and moved toward a more formal look, producing factory-made rugs with central floral medallions and precise symmetry. That medallion style held sway until the years after World War I, when Sarouk artisans introduced a more open layout in which graceful, detached floral sprays are scattered across the field.
