Story Behind the Art: The tradition of hand-knotted rugs in Pakistan stretches back centuries, with textile weaving in the Indus region dating to the 11th-century Ghaznavid and Gh?r? periods and becoming firmly established under the early Mughal dynasty in the 16th century. Today, hand-knotted carpets are among Pakistan’s top export products and represent the country’s second-largest cottage and small-scale industry. Skilled Pakistani weavers produce a wide array of styles, incorporating motifs such as guls, medallions, botehs (paisleys), traceries, and geometric patterns. Among the most esteemed are “Pak Persian” rugs, woven at high densities of 16×18 knots per linear inch (approximately 288 knots per square inch), offering superior durability and definition. While less common than lower-density rugs, these finely knotted carpets reflect exceptional craftsmanship and artistic detail. Benefiting from global trade evolution in the late 20th century, Pakistan’s rug industry continues to deliver versatile, high-quality rugs suitable for both decorative and high-traffic spaces.
