Story Behind the Art: Kashan rugs, named for their origins in the Persian city of Kashan, are prized for their fine craftsmanship and dense knotting technique. These rugs display elaborate arabesques, floral stems, rosettes, palmettes, blossoms, and leaf motifs arranged in tightly packed patterns, either in repeating layouts or centralized medallion designs. Traditional Kashans often include pendant medallions, decorated corner spandrels, and rhythmic floral ornamentation. In the 16th century, master artisans traveled to the areas of modern Pakistan and India, where they introduced Kashan weaving methods that led to carpets of such quality they occasionally surpassed their Persian counterparts. This shared heritage continues to influence Kashan-style rugs made outside Iran today.
