Needlepoint rugs are skillfully handwoven textiles, crafted by stitching wool yarn onto an open-grid cotton canvas. This method allows for highly intricate designs and detailed patterns. While needlepoint rug-making dates back to North Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia, it was in England and France that the craft flourished. French needlepoint rugs, particularly those featuring Aubusson and Savonnerie designs, draw inspiration from Rococo, chinoiserie, and Neoclassical influences. The first Chinese reproductions of European needlepoint rugs emerged in the 1920s, and by the 1980s, a resurgence of interest led to their continued production using time-honored techniques. Today, these rugs remain a timeless representation of artistic craftsmanship.
