Story Behind the Art: Soumak rugs preserve a historic weaving method known for its distinctive texture and practical strength. Originating across the Caucasus, Persia, and Anatolia, the technique was traditionally used by nomadic and village artisans to produce durable floor coverings and portable household textiles. Instead of creating a raised knotted pile, Soumak weaving wraps the weft yarns around the warp, building a firm, low-profile surface with an embroidered appearance. This construction is particularly well suited to bold geometry, stylized florals, tree motifs, tribal symbols, and repeated decorative borders. Hand-spun wool and naturally derived dyes historically gave these rugs their depth of color and subtle tonal variation. Today, the same method is practiced in several weaving regions, including India, where artisans continue to reinterpret the style for modern interiors. Soumak rugs remain valued for their reversible construction, handcrafted texture, visual richness, and ability to perform beautifully in active spaces.
