Story Behind the Art: Pakistan’s hand-knotted rug tradition, which ranks as the country’s second-largest cottage industry, dates back to the 11th century during the Mughal era. Skilled artisans are known for their ability to craft a wide range of rug styles, often blending motifs like guls, medallions, paisleys (botehs), tracery patterns, and geometric elements in striking combinations. To achieve a weathered, aged look, rugs are treated with stone washing that softens and fades the colors. Peshawar-style rugs are especially recognized for their low, finely clipped pile, oversized motifs, and distinctive antique-inspired palettes in soft ivory and warm golden tones.
